- Super Mario Bros: Shine Expedition is an open world style game just like Super Luigi and the Golden Shrooms, but this time, with multiple open world areas connected together by a central hub. This gameplay style is later improved upon again in Super Mario Bros: Mythical Mushrooms.
- You need to collect blue coins in order to unlock new levels.
- The toads in the hub area have randomly selected dialogue.
- Some toads give you a quiz that you need to complete in order to get their shine.
